Packing for Your Trip

·

The most crucial step before embarking on a journey is knowing what to pack. This becomes even more essential when trekking through a country with climates as diverse as Nepal.

Equipment Checklist

Here's a comprehensive list of items to bring when trekking in Nepal. Feel free to adapt it to your needs:

  • A trekking backpack, plus a larger suitcase or backpack to store items you won't need during your trek,
  • A "daypack" style backpack for daily essentials,

Clothing

  • City wear,
  • Waterproof jacket, such as a K-Way or Gore-Tex, to protect you from the elements,
  • Wind-resistant fleece jacket,
  • Waterproof hiking boots—break them in before your trek, as new boots can cause blisters,
  • Comfortable pants and shorts that don't pinch at the waist to prevent chafing,
  • High-cut hiking socks and thermal leggings if you plan to trek at higher altitudes or during winter,
  • Breathable underwear that won't irritate during long walks,
  • Lightweight or warm clothing with quick-drying properties (avoid cotton), depending on your intended altitude,
  • Gloves,
  • Beanie and scarf,
  • Hat to protect you from wind and sun,
  • Sleeping bag liner for inside your sleeping bag,
  • Sunglasses with UV index 3, or stronger if you plan to trek above 3,000 meters,
  • Pair of sandals or flip-flops,

Hygiene

  • Soap, shampoo, biodegradable detergent (you can find multi-purpose products in specialty shops; Marseille soap is a good example),
  • Appropriate sunscreen, SPF 40+ to 50+ if trekking above 3,000 meters,
  • Toothpaste and toothbrush,
  • Wet wipes and alcohol-free hand sanitizer,
  • Microfiber towel,
  • Tissues,
  • Powdered laundry detergent,
  • A tailored first-aid kit,

Accessories

  • Camera with protection and spare batteries or solar charger,
  • Swiss Army knife, storm lighter, durable thread, and needles,
  • Headlamp,
  • Regional map,
  • Plastic bags to protect your belongings in case of rain, or to organize the contents of your backpack.

Renting Equipment on Site

Of course, you'll need to organize your pack based on your destination! Remember that for extended treks, you'll always have the option to rent equipment from your travel agency in Nepal or at specialized shops. Be sure to carefully inspect the quality of any gear before accepting it.

Even if you hire a porter, don't overpack unnecessarily. Porters typically have a maximum weight limit of 13 kg per person for two people. You'll also want to consider domestic flights, which allow baggage between 10 kg and 20 kg (for example, flights to Pokhara permit 15 kg in hold and 5 kg in cabin, while the flight to Lukla allows only 15 kg total).

Tips

Pay attention to the season you plan to travel. Pack extra rain protection if you're visiting between May and September, and warmer clothing if you intend to visit Nepal during winter.

In the mountains, at higher altitudes, conditions are always challenging, and UV protection diminishes as the air thins. It's therefore essential to prepare with high-quality equipment for your own safety.
