Choosing a Partner
Parents decide for their children on the best match based on social status, occupation, religion, and even astrological sign or blood type. While marriages once took place almost exclusively between people from the same village, today's communication technologies allow parents to post advertisements on websites specifically dedicated to matchmaking. They simply need to enter certain information and criteria to connect with other parents seeking a spouse for their child. Some also turn to matrimonial agencies that do the work for them.
Generally, parents from both sides meet and then arrange a meeting between the young couple. They have the right to refuse a few suitors. The couple may exchange messages but rarely spend time alone before marriage.
Love marriages are very rare. Young people generally become discouraged by the difficulties they encounter. They do not want to shame their family or be a burden and prefer to respect their parents' wishes. Nevertheless, for many, an arranged marriage is not a constraint but a deliberate choice. They trust their parents completely to find them the right partner and are happy not to have to worry about this matter.
The Wedding Ceremony
Customs vary depending on ethnicity, caste, and religions. In the Hindu faith, the ceremony can last up to four days. During the first days, religious rituals are performed to honor ancestors and gods. On the big day, the Janti, a lively and festive procession, leads the groom to his bride's house. A group greets the procession and informs the bride's family of the number of guests. Celebrations take place at both families' homes where they dance, eat, and feast in grand style. Numerous rituals are performed during the ceremony.
Moving In
The bride leaves her parents' home on the wedding day and moves into her husband's house, generally with his entire family. The arrival of Western culture in the country is increasingly encouraging young couples to live independently. Divorces are very rare because they are associated with shame.
