Extremely popular in Southern Africa for wildlife discovery, off-road vehicle excursions allow you to be at the heart of nature without disturbing the species that thrive there.
The "Jeep", in addition to offering a 360° view of the environment, plays a deterrent role against wildlife that can become aggressive.
Today used in visiting Chitwan National Park, the off-road vehicle provides access to the most remote areas while also covering vast distances quickly. Hyenas, tigers, bears, crocodiles, elephants and more—the vehicle brings you as close as possible to the intimate world of these animals.
"The driver's walkie-talkie crackles: A mother rhinoceros and her calf have been spotted in the southern zone of the park. The 140 horses of the 'four-by-four' are unleashed across the rugged park trail. In the middle of an immense swamp, the 'jeep' races at breakneck speed, leaving a cloud of dust in its wake. Our guide checks his rifle one last time, and I check my camera. Ejecting stones from the path on a sharp turn, we take the final bend to finally reach a magnificent clearing bathed in sunlight. There before us, the mother rhinoceros on high alert, staring straight at us; behind her, her two-month-old calf pokes its nose out—more curious than afraid."
For your knowledge: The term "jeep" refers to the vehicle type, not the brand. Today, most safaris use Land Rovers or, in the case of Népal, Indian brands such as TATA and Mahindra.
