Sapana Village Lodge
Sapana Village Lodge
Eco-responsible lodge on the edge of Chitwan National Park: guided safaris, on-site organic vegetable garden and immersion in Tharu and Chepang cultures.
Sapana Village Lodge sits on the edge of the Chitwan National Park, in the plains of Nepal's Terai region. This eco-responsible accommodation was founded by the creator of a local NGO, and a commitment to social and environmental responsibility runs through every aspect of the lodge's operations: on-site agriculture, employment of neighbouring communities, and ecosystem awareness programs for the park.
Why stay here
The lodge appeals to travellers seeking a comfortable yet unpretentious base from which to explore Chitwan, without the trappings of large resorts. Its main draw rests on three elements: immediate proximity to the park, allowing early-morning safari departures without lengthy transfers; the cultural dimension, with direct access to surrounding Tharu villages; and a sustainable approach, visible even on your plate since much of the restaurant's produce comes from the lodge's own vegetable garden.
It's well-suited to stays of 2 to 3 nights—time enough to combine safari, cultural immersion and rest after the intensity of Kathmandu or trekking the Annapurna Circuit.
Atmosphere and architecture
The buildings echo local Tharu architectural traditions: earthen brick, thatched roofs, covered verandas. Décor was commissioned from regional artisans, giving the place visual coherence with its surroundings rather than standardised hotel aesthetics. This is firmly mid-range eco-responsible territory, not luxury: honest comfort, cleanliness, but no pretence to grandeur.
Common areas—restaurant, garden, lounges—are designed to encourage traveller interaction and foster quiet evenings spent listening to the nearby jungle's sounds.
Dining and services
The restaurant is one of the lodge's standout features. The menu offers both traditional Nepali cuisine (dal bhat, curries, Tharu dishes) and Western options for travellers in transit. A significant portion of vegetables, herbs and fruit comes directly from the organic vegetable garden cultivated on-site, noticeably enhancing the quality of vegetarian preparations.
For activities, the lodge arranges:
- Jeep safaris in the national park with naturalist guides trained in local fauna (one-horned rhinoceros, deer, crocodiles, and occasionally tiger and leopard)
- Walking safaris in small groups with experienced guides
- Canoe trips on the Rapti River to observe birds and gharials
- Meetings with Tharu communities in neighbouring villages, and introductory treks to Chepang culture in the nearby hills
- Visits to the elephant breeding centre and local conservation initiatives
Location
Sapana Village Lodge is located in Sauraha, the main northern gateway to Chitwan National Park. Expect around 5 to 6 hours' drive from Kathmandu, or a short flight to Bharatpur followed by a 30-minute transfer. Its position on the park's edge means quick access to safari zones, with no need for lengthy early-morning transfers.
Nearby
Beyond the park itself, the Chitwan region offers several alternative stops: Sauraha's markets and Tharu villages, the Rapti River for sunset excursions, and bird-watching spots (the area is home to over 500 recorded species). To extend your Nepal itinerary, Chitwan pairs logically with the Kathmandu Valley upstream and Pokhara downstream.
If you're building a comprehensive itinerary, other addresses can complement this jungle stay: the Hotel Tibet International or Swotha Traditional Homes for Kathmandu, and the Yeti Mountain Home in Namche or Kongde for those moving on to the Everest trek.
