Getting Around in Nepal

·

There are many ways to get around Nepal, from the most straightforward to the most original! You can hop on a local bus to experience the real face of Nepal, take a flight to reach a remote mountain airstrip, or even climb into a rickshaw to explore cities at your own pace.

Public transport in major cities

In Kathmandu and Pokhara, public transportation will get you to your destination for around 20 NPR. Unfortunately, they are often quite crowded. You'll find buses, microbuses (the size of large vans), tempos (a type of electric tuk tuk), and rickshaws in the most touristy areas.

It's fairly challenging to navigate public transport if you don't speak the language or know the regions. Indeed, there are no maps or fixed schedules for buses!

Taxis in Nepal

Many taxis roam the cities. Simply flag one down, tell the driver your destination, and most importantly, agree on the price before getting in. Don't hesitate to negotiate, and try another taxi if you're not satisfied. Drivers often take much longer routes or drive through heavy traffic to increase the fare. A ride of around 15 minutes costs, for example, approximately 300 NPR.

To get from Tribhuvan Airport to the city centre, taxis often demand far too much. The normal cost is 300 NPR and remains acceptable up to 500 NPR. If the price your taxi offers seems too high, feel free to negotiate and try another taxi.

Connecting Nepali cities

To travel between different cities, there are 3 types of buses:

  • Local buses, generally old, crowded, without air conditioning, and often prone to breaking down. You can buy tickets at local bus stations, and they constitute quite an adventure in themselves.
  • Tourist buses, newer than local ones, primarily accessible to tourists though locals occasionally use them too. They aren't much more expensive, but tickets can only be booked through travel agencies and hotels.
  • Luxury buses, considerably more expensive, operating through private companies, particularly on popular routes. These buses have air conditioning, all necessary comforts (and then some!), and include a meal on longer journeys.

To reach remote regions more quickly, you can take a domestic flight to one of Nepal's 25 airports.
