Exploring Monjo Village
Monjo is best known as a transit point and essential rest stop for trekkers traveling between Phakding to the south and Jorsale to the north, en route to the Gokyo Lakes. Most visitors spend one or two days in Monjo to acclimatize to the altitude.
The village functions as a gateway to the Sagarmatha National Park. From Monjo, you can glimpse the distant peaks of Thamserku and Khumbila that frame the valley.
The main trekking routes to the Gokyo Lakes originate from the town of Lukla. Trekkers pass through Monjo to recover before continuing their journey.
The village offers numerous guesthouses and lodging facilities catering to trekkers. Tourism is the lifeblood of Monjo's economy, with nearly the entire community dependent on trekking traffic.
The trail to the village winds sinuously along the Dudh Koshi River. To reach Monjo, you'll cross this river multiple times via dramatic suspension bridges.
The landscape is dotted with traditional Sherpa homes and family-run lodges, while forested hillsides of pine trees surround the settlement.
Climate
Monjo enjoys a warm, temperate climate similar to nearby Phakding. Winter temperatures hover around freezing, but expect ideal temperatures between 10°C and 20°C throughout the rest of the year. Like other temperate zones across Népal, summer brings the heaviest precipitation, which can make trekking more challenging.
To reach Monjo, fly from Kathmandu to Lukla or Namche Bazar, the heart of Sherpa territory. From there, begin your trek through the Sherpa villages of Chablung, Ghat, Phakding, and Benkar.
