Phortse is a small agricultural village in the Khumbu region of the Himalayas, located in the southern section of Sagarmatha National Park. It sits at an elevation of 3,480 meters. Phortse also lies on the route leading to the Everest Base Camp, north of Namche Bazaar. On the Everest trail, this Sherpa village serves as an important waypoint for numerous trekkers.
The Village
Red down jacket, black cap pulled low, we follow Lapka, our Sherpa guide, along a rugged trail. With a smile on his face, he reveals teeth that are nearly perfect, contrasting sharply with a complexion weathered by the region's extreme conditions. Amid vegetation scorched by the sun, Phortse village finally reveals itself to us.
Originally an agricultural settlement, cultivated plots separated by stone walls stand in contrast to the modern lodges built at the hamlet's center. A Buddhist monastery overlooks the village. Designed around an ecotourism model, the village has managed to preserve its authenticity. Isolated in pristine nature on the heights of a deep valley, a breathtaking landscape stretches before us. Mountains shrouded in white clouds, rhododendron meadows and dense forest at the center, the bugle cry of a deer echoes in the valley below, carried on the mountain winds.
10:30 p.m., night has fallen. In my companion's arms, we gaze upward. Billions of points of light illuminate our eyes. Free from light pollution and any clouds to obscure the sky, we marvel at the milky white band of the Milky Way. The crisp night air contrasts with the warmth of my lips against hers. Exhausted from the day's trek, we eventually return to our lodge, ready for new adventures tomorrow.
Climate and Geography
The climate in Phortse village, like all others in the Khumbu region, is harsh. The ideal seasons to visit Phortse are in autumn and spring. Temperatures drop to −10°C in winter and rarely exceed 15°C at the height of summer. During high season, you can expect average temperatures ranging between 5°C and 10°C. Situated on the path to Gokyo Lakes, the village is surrounded by significant biodiversity. Mountain deer, yaks, various pheasant species, bears, and snow leopards coexist with the inhabitants.
Phortse village is located 5 to 6 hours' walk from Namche Bazaar, or 4 to 6 days' walk from Lukla, the region's only airport. Accessible only on foot, you have the option of being accompanied by domesticated yaks.
To reach it, you must take a 45-minute flight from Kathmandu. Then begin trekking from Lukla to Namche Bazaar, continue to Phakding, and finally descend to Phortse, which lies near the Dudh Koshi River.
