Phakding is a village located in the eastern region of Népal, within the municipality of Chaurikharka, 138 km from Kathmandu, nestled in the valley of the Dudh Kosi River. This settlement is widely regarded as the gateway to trekking in the Everest region. You'll almost certainly pass through here if you intend to see the top of the world during your journey.
Exploring Phakding Village
Like Sagarmatha Park, of which it is part, Phakding village was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.
Phakding is known as a transit village and stopping point for trekkers making their way to Mount Everest, whether via the Gokyo Ri route or the Tengboche trail.
Phakding is a settlement that thrives primarily on tourism. The village boasts a number of guesthouses welcoming visitors, along with several dining establishments.
The primary trekking route to Everest Base Camp follows the Lukla to Phakding itinerary, with a gradual descent that passes through the villages of Chheplung and Ghat.
During the trek, visitors will enjoy spectacular views of Kongde Peak, Lukla, and beyond. Breathtaking landscapes accompany trekkers through endemic fauna and flora, mountain terrain, and numerous Sherpa settlements.
Phakding sits at a relatively modest altitude, making it ideal for acclimatization. The trek to Phakding is manageable, as the path descends then follows a level trail alongside the Dudh Kosi River. You'll also have the opportunity to visit a small monastery and experience Sherpa culture along the way.
Climate
Phakding enjoys a warm and temperate climate. As in most regions of Népal, significant rainfall occurs mainly during summer, particularly in July and August. Year-round, temperatures range between 0°C and 20°C, typically hovering between 10°C and 15°C during the high season of spring and autumn.
To reach Phakding village, you must first fly to Lukla from Kathmandu via an internal flight lasting approximately 45 minutes. From there, the trek takes roughly 2 hours.
Alternatively, you can take a bus from Kathmandu to Jiri. From there, a trekking route leads onward to Phakding. The trek from Jiri takes between 4 and 6 days, depending on your preferred pace.
