Spiritual capital of Tibet at 3,650m, Lhasa unveils the Potala, Jokhang and Barkhor. Our complete guide to planning your journey from Nepal.

Lhasa, capital of the kingdom of Tibet since the seventh century, was the seat of Tibet's government under the reign of the 5th Dalai Lama, and is now the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region, an autonomous region of the People's Republic of China, more commonly called Tibet, though it covers only about half of historic Tibet.

The Potala Palace, the former palace of the Dalai Lama who headed state before China's administration of Tibet, the Jokhang Temple, and the Norbulingka Palace, the former summer residence of the Dalai Lamas, are all listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
