Just 15 km from Pokhara, Begnas Lake offers swimming, boat rides and views of the Annapurna range, set in pristine rural surroundings.

Begnas Lake is a freshwater lake located in Lekhnath municipality, Kaski district, approximately 15 kilometres south-east of the Pokhara valley. The second-largest of eight lakes in the region after Phewa Lake, it offers unspoiled rural surroundings with the Annapurna, Machapuchare and Manaslu massifs as a dramatic backdrop.

Why visit Begnas Lake

Begnas is a quieter alternative to the bustling shores of Phewa. The lake stretches across agricultural land, bordered by hills covered in rice paddies and small villages. The Gurung ethnic groups, long established in the region, live mainly from farming, beekeeping and, on certain slopes, coffee cultivation.

When the weather is clear, the snow-capped peaks of Annapurna, Machapuchare (Fish Tail) and Manaslu are reflected in the lake's waters. The site suits both a brief stop and a full day combining hiking, swimming and visits to surrounding villages.

What to do at Begnas Lake

Boat rides

Wooden boats are available for hire on the western shore, near the dam. An hour-long outing allows you to cruise along wooded shores and reach the quieter zones of the lake, frequented by local fishermen.

Swimming

The lake waters are calm and clear, ideal for swimming outside the monsoon season. A few equipped jetties serve as access points, though facilities remain basic.

Hiking to Rupa Lake

A trail connects Begnas to Rupa Lake, smaller and used for fish farming. Allow 2 to 3 hours round trip through ridges, rice paddies and hamlets. The viewpoint at Begnas Kot, accessible via the same network of paths, offers panoramic views of both lakes and the Himalayan range.

Gurung villages

Villages scattered around the lake provide insights into local agricultural life, beekeeping practices and, depending on the season, rice paddy farming activities.

When to visit Begnas Lake

October to April is the most favourable period. Skies are generally clear in autumn (October-November), maximising chances of spotting Annapurna and Manaslu peaks. Winter (December-February) remains accessible, with crisp mornings and good visibility.

From June to September, the monsoon brings muddy shores, slippery trails and limited visibility of peaks. Lake levels vary throughout the year: since 1988, a dam has regulated outflow into the Khudi Khola, and levels gradually drop in the dry season due to irrigation withdrawals.

A 2 to 3-hour stop is enough for a boat ride and quick tour. To combine Begnas, Rupa Lake and a viewpoint, plan a full day from Pokhara.

Yes, in clear weather. Best conditions occur in autumn and winter, early morning, when Annapurna, Machapuchare and Manaslu are clearly visible from the heights surrounding the lake.

A hiking trail connects the two lakes in 2 to 3 hours round trip, passing through ridges and agricultural villages. No special equipment is needed beyond suitable shoes.

It's not essential, but staying a night in a lodge on the heights allows you to witness sunrise over the peaks, often clearer than midday.
