High-altitude lodge in Thame (3800 m), a Sherpa village in the Khumbu situated on the former trade route to Tibet, 4 hours' walk from Namche Bazaar.

A high-altitude lodge in Thame, on the ancient Tibet trade route

Yeti Mountain Home in Thame is a lodge situated at 3800 meters altitude, in a Khumbu village perched on the old trade route that once connected Nepal to Tibet. Far from the main flow of Everest trekking, Thame preserves an unspoiled Sherpa atmosphere, marked by its gompa overlooking the valley and the legacy of its inhabitants, who are celebrated in mountaineering circles worldwide.

The property belongs to the Yeti Mountain Home network, a chain of Nepalese lodges offering a standard of comfort above the average of Khumbu refuges, while remaining adapted to the constraints of high-altitude accommodation.

Why choose this lodge

Thame lies approximately 4 hours' walk from Namche Bazaar, on a less-traveled lateral route than the classic path to Everest Base Camp. Choosing to stop here means stepping off the main axis to explore a quieter valley, ideal for gradual acclimatization.

The village is also the birthplace of Apa Sherpa, who summited Everest 21 times — a record that speaks volumes about the local mountain culture. Several elite sherpas hail from this valley, and spending time here offers a different perspective on mountaineering history, beyond the typical tourist trail.

Atmosphere and character

The lodge presents itself as a sober mountain building, designed to withstand high-altitude climate. The overall atmosphere remains that of a Himalayan refuge: a common room warmed by a stove in the evening, shared meals, windows overlooking surrounding peaks. The village's silence, absence of traffic, and the particular light of this enclosed valley form the essence of the experience.

The establishment does not aim for grand luxury — which would be incongruous at 3800 meters — but offers a comfort level noticeably higher than traditional tea houses, which can make a meaningful difference after several days of trekking.

Services and facilities

  • Heated private rooms
  • Common room with stove, relaxation space in the evening
  • On-site dining: Nepalese cuisine and international dishes adapted to altitude
  • Hot water (subject to availability, a common constraint at high altitude)
  • Sherpa staff with expert knowledge of valley routes

As with any high-altitude accommodation in Nepal, comfort depends on conditions: gas supply, weather, occupancy. Expectations should be calibrated accordingly.

Location

Thame is accessible from Namche Bazaar by approximately 4 hours' walk, on a trail skirting the Bhote Koshi valley. The village sits apart from the main Everest Base Camp trekking route, making it an excellent diversion for acclimatization itineraries or combined circuits to Renjo La and Cho La passes.

The 3800-meter altitude demands measured progress from Lukla: most trekkers arrive here on the third or fourth day of walking, after an acclimatization stop in Namche.

Things to do nearby

The Thame gompa, a Buddhist monastery perched above the village, is reached in approximately 1 hour's walk. Founded centuries ago, it remains an active place of worship for the local Sherpa community. From the gompa, the trail continues to Sumdur Peak, a secondary summit offering an expanded panorama of surrounding peaks — a full-day excursion for acclimatized trekkers.

The valley also lends itself to extensions toward Renjo La pass (5360 m) to reach the Gokyo valley, or toward Lungden further north. To plan your entire route, consult our Yeti Mountain Home Namche guide, the typical stop before Thame.

Preparing your Nepal stay

Before or after trekking, most travelers pass through Kathmandu. Several urban accommodations can complement your itinerary: Hotel Thamel in the capital's center, Hotel Tibet International, or Atithi Resort in Pokhara to combine Khumbu and lakes. For trekking in the Annapurnas, Hotel Manang in Kathmandu serves as a convenient base.
